We had a great Christmas here at the Mmm... household (minus the nagging heartburn, ugh). While we were planning on going out for New Year's Eve this year, plans fell through and we'll find ourselves at home, watching a movie and no doubt sleeping on the couch when the clock strikes midnight. I do have one more family gathering to prepare for this weekend though. No sit down meal, just a selection of hot and cold appetizers and snacks (or the good stuff).
While I still haven't finalized my menu (yes, the party is tomorrow), I have found a ton of inspiration from this Cooking Light slideshow of 100 Ideas for Appetizers... everything from Artichoke and Fennel Caponata to Sloppy Joe Sliders. I'm going to have to plan a lot more gatherings to get through this list though.
Looking back through my own recipes, the following ones are jumping out at me as great New Year's Eve fare:
Creamy Mushroom Tart
Lobster & Bearnaise Toasts with Charred Corn Relish
Bacon Jam on pretty much anything...
I'm still trying to figure out my plans for this blog in 2013. I know I would love to be able to focus more on my photography, which was put on the back burner this year, it was hard enough to try to find time to cook or bake, let alone during a time when I could actually stage a mini photo shoot. I am a Mom first and foremost though, which means that plans change... a lot.
Whatever your plans are for New Year's Eve and the year ahead, I hope your lives are full of happiness and good health.
Cheers!
Holiday Muddy Buddies
I can't believe that I never had Muddy Buddies (Puppy Chow, Puppy Food, Monkey Munch, what have you) until last Christmas. I am somewhat thankful though as it is every bit as addictive as each recipe says it is. The first batch I made this year barely made it a day... oopsie.
This may be my last post before Christmas (but maybe not, who knows if I don't). If it is, I want to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and I hope that you spend the final days of this year with those you love and that you enjoy every feast to the fullest.
Enjoy!
The 'Holiday' part comes simply from the addition of a few handfuls of Holiday M&Ms. This recipe is why I will always have a box of Chex in the cupboard for ever more. If you bake, you have the rest of the ingredients on hand anyway.
Holiday Muddy Buddies
Adapted from Betty Crocker
9 Cups Rice Chex
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
1/2 cup peanut butter
1/4 cup butter
1 tsp pure vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups icing sugar
1 cup (or so) Holiday M&Ms
Measure the Chex into a large bowl. Then, microwave the chocolate chips, peanut butter and butter uncovered on high for one minute; stir. Microwave about 30 seconds longer or until mixture can be stirred smooth. Stir in the vanilla. Pour mixture over the cereal, stirring until evenly coated.
Evenly sprinkle the icing sugar on top and gently toss until covered (some folks do this in a large zipper bag, I'm lazy and it works just fine).
Mix in M&Ms and lay out in a single layer on parchment or silicone mats to dry and then store in an airtight container.
This may be my last post before Christmas (but maybe not, who knows if I don't). If it is, I want to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and I hope that you spend the final days of this year with those you love and that you enjoy every feast to the fullest.
Enjoy!
Chicken & Sweet Potato Shepherd's Pie - Celebrating the Holidays with Cooking Light & The Chew
The Cooking Light Bloggers' Connection members were given a chance this weekend to put our own unique spins on some holiday recipes & crafts from The Chew. My spin almost spiralled out of control when hubby was called in to do overtime, leaving me home without a car to get to the grocery store...
Never, ever be afraid to switch up a recipe (okay, sometimes be afraid)... this time I lucked out, big time.
For additional recipes and craft ideas, visit abc.com/thechew. Or, just tune in weekdays on ABC at 1PM EST.
I ended up with a twist on Shepherd's Pie that I will continue to make again and again... we loved it!
I had selected to put my own twist on Christine's Shepherd's Pie, since I hadn't made it in a long time and it sounded like a perfect cold-weather dinner. Having to make my Shepherd's Pie totally with ingredients I had on hand was actually pretty simple. I substituted ground beef for ground chicken (and beef broth for chicken broth), sweet potatoes for white potatoes and skipped the mushrooms and swapped corn for carrots.

Tim Hortons T-DISCs & The New TASSIMO T55 Brewing System Review
Again, it goes without saying, but I'll say it anyway. Coffee is always on my wish list.
For the past week I've been giving the TASSIMO T55 Brewer and the new Tim Hortons T-Discs a whirl in the Mmm... is for Mommy kitchen. Tim Hortons finally jumped into the single brew world and have decided to pair up with TASSIMO and their unique bar code reading brewing technology to do so.
There are three varieties of Tim Hortons T-DISCs available: regular, decaffeinated, and Latte. I wanted to jump right in to the deep end, so my first TASSIMO adventure was with a Tim Hortons Latte. When you open the package, you have one box of 8 espresso T-DISCs and 2 boxes of 4 latte (milk) T-DISCs.
After I set up the TASSIMO (the process is similar to when I set up my Keurig, you have to fill it up with water and purge it, repeatedly. A nice addition to the TASSIMO is the included Mavea water filter, so you can fill the water reservoir up right at the tap), I popped in the Tim Hortons Espresso T-DISC, now understanding how TASSIMO brewers can brew all of the fancy premium beverages... it's a step by step process, just like doing it by standard methods.
I watched as the TASSIMO brewer did it's thing and brewed up a cute little serving of espresso...
Yep, that's espresso alright... nice!
Now comes the the 'latte' part, the steamed milk and bit of foam. I have to admit, this is the part that I was worried about, could this concentrated milk product that's in the T-DISC possibly taste like fresh milk? We'll see..
At first, I watched the cup fill up with hot milk (the concentrated milk mixed with the hot water under pressure) and then top off with a nice bit of foam. This barcode technology really works, this machine is smart...
Not bad for a first go, my cup was a bit big (it tells you on the T-DISC box what size cup to use), but this mug is my favourite over the holidays.
Thumbs up... this was a really good latte. Sounds odd to say this, but it was exponentially better than the Tim Hortons latte I tried in-store when they first came out (I even had them make it twice, thinking something was wrong... in their defence it was when they first came out, maybe they've improved their process?).
After the latte testing, I had my parents over for coffee, two true blue Timmies drinkers. This would be the best test the regular Tim Hortons T-DISCs could get. They both loved the Tim Hortons brewed in the TASSIMO T55 and agreed that it tastes like a really good cup of Tim Hortons coffee (again, in-store seems to have some consistency issues).
I've been testing the Tim Hortons Decaffeinated T-DISCs in the evening and they are (yet again) better than the in-store decaf, probably because of the freshness of the brew.
The TASSIMO T55 Brewer and the Tim Hortons T-DISCs have earned themselves some more of my prime countertop real estate. It also seems like crow might be replacing turkey on the menu this holiday, because I've been eating it... both with my opinions towards TASSIMO (I was a hardcore Keurig fan), their milk T-DISCS (tastes just like fresh) and Tim Hortons coffee (much to my parents delight).
While the TASSIMO T55 Brewer can be found nationwide in various stores, the Tim Hortons T-DISCS can only be purchased at participating Tim Hortons restaurants and online.
So, to make a Twilight reference (because I can), Bella wouldn't be complete with both Edward & Jacob in her life, so cut it out with this 'Team Edward' 'Team Jacob' nonsense. I know Keurig will always be my Edward, but TASSIMO has proven itself to be my Jacob (without any of that weird imprinting stuff and sadly without the abs) and I'll have room in my heart and my counter for both of them, with their various differences and similarities, forever.
Disclosure: I received complimentary product to be able to provide this review. Opinions on my blog are, as always, mine and are never for sale. For the record, I am Team Edward.
The #WinewithChicken Dinner Party Scoop & Video
So this past Friday evening saw the social event of the holiday season hit Timberlea - Mmm is for Mommy's #WinewithChicken dinner party.
As I let you know last week, I was selected to be one of the four Canadian bloggers who would throw a dinner party on December 7th, featuring a special recipe from the Chicken Farmers of Canada website perfectly paired with two specially selected wines from Chateau des Charmes... all the while keeping you up to date on Twitter & Instagram using the #winewithchicken hashtag.
I wasn't nervous at all until the day of the party... no doubt due to the dreams I had the night before, which involved serving dessert directly after apps and totally forgetting to put the chickens in the oven. Luckily neither of those two things actually happened, and the recipe I was given to prepare, Christmas Truffle Chicken, was simple and tasty... the pan jus was incredible, and the chicken was so moist.
I kept the sides simple and went with two all-new recipes... why not go all the way, right? I served the chicken on a cauliflower purée aside maple balsamic roasted root veggies and winter fruit, which I made in the lovely new Emile Henry oven pan I was sent (I'll share both recipes soon, promise). For dessert... we had a variety of Christmas cookies and candy, most including dark chocolate, which also went oh so well with the wine.
One of the best parts of this prize/task (besides the food) is that I got the opportunity to make my first video... and oh, did I learn a lot doing it (like that I held my camera wrong the whole time).
Without further ado, I present to you the best thing you'll see today, a video I made to document my whole #WinewithChicken dinner party experience (please be gentle!)...
The party was a great experience, and I had a fantastic time, nerves and all. Thank you to everyone involved, from sponsors to guests to Aunts looking after children.

The wines that were sent to me by Chateau des Charmes to go with the chicken were their 2008 Pinot Noir and secondly their 2009 Cabernet-Merlot. Being about the furthest a group can be from professional sommeliers, all five of us agreed that the Pinot Noir was a nice 'light' tasting red wine that went well with the chicken. The Cabernet-Merlot was described as 'woody', both myself and another guest actually preferred it to the Pinot Noir for general drinkabilty.

Potato Jazz - Product Review & Giveaway
Okay, okay, so potatoes are not actually on my Christmas list... but Potato Jazz by The Little Potato Company gave me the gift of time, which is something on almost everyone's wish list.
I've learned to cook and bake some pretty impressive dishes over the past few years, but potatoes and I do not get along for some reason. While I've had a bit better luck lately, I am notorious for under-cooking potatoes and hate prepping them (thankfully Hubs doesn't mind peeling and/or cutting). When I was offered the Potato Jazz review, I was hoping to find a quick and easy side dish and a way for my potato-loving husband to get more of his favourite tuber... but also a bit nervous that I still might find a way to screw them up.
Potato Jazz are simply little (or creamer) potatoes that come in a specially designed microwavable tray. From the Potato Jazz website:
"At the Little Potato Company, we do not genetically modify our products and are committed to producing and selling potatoes in their natural state. Our potatoes are simply specialty varieties sourced from around the world that naturally grow to their perfect little size at full maturity. We also use traditional breeding techniques involving cross-pollination to produce new potato plants. It’s potatoes the way nature intended. (You also won’t find any preservatives or funny words you can’t pronounce on our ingredient list.)"
It was awesome to find out that these were not 'Frankenveggies' but simply cute little potatoes.
Each Potato Jazz tray comes with it's own blend of herbs & spices, which are added after cooking. The four available varieties are Garlic and Parsley, Zesty Italian, Savoury Herb and Chipotle.
The directions on Potato Jazz take simple one step further. In fact, the first night I was going to test these I ended up coming down with something and hubs had to fend for himself. Not that he's kitchen-challenged, but these were so simple for him to make.
Really, you just take off the packet of spice and put it in the microwave on high for 5 minutes - no poking or peeling back film or anything, the tray does it all. Following the instructions, you let the potatoes rest for a couple of minutes, remove the film, then you sprinkle on the seasoning and toss. The instructions said you can add some butter or olive oil at the point, but I didn't... and I didn't miss it. The moisture on the steamed potatoes was enough to make the spice mix adhere.
The potatoes come out perfectly done, even when I make them! The texture of the potatoes is really creamy and they have a great flavour, even without the seasoning. The seasonings are not salty and blend well with the selected potato varieties in each pack. So far my favourite is the Savoury Herb and Hubs, well he likes them all.
I really enjoyed trying Potato Jazz and look forward to keeping a few trays in my fridge to complete our sometimes rushed weeknight dinners. To find a retailer near you, you can use their store locator.
The Little Potato Company has also offered to give one of my Canadian readers the opportunity to try out the Potato Jazz lineup. To win a variety box of 8 assorted Potato Jazz products, simply fill out the Rafflecopter below. Good luck!

Holiday Traditions, Netflix Style & Giveaway
Okay, it could be hard to tie this giveaway in with food, but sometimes I get the opportunity to share something that I just love outside of the kitchen & playroom. Netflix is one of those things.
I subscribed to Netflix earlier this year and have since gotten rid of cable... this has saved us a huge amount of money (it's only $8 a month), plus I can access it on my iPhone and our iPad on the go.
A recent survey reports that 58% of Canadian families with children that celebrate Christmas watch movies together over the holidays. Movies are big in our house all year round, and I know we usually try to watch a few extra flicks in the week between Christmas and New Year's when we aren't out visiting or feasting (Last year we watched the Lord of the Rings Trilogy... again).
I think a Netflix subscription is a great gift idea and it definitely doesn't break the bank... especially if you can win one! Netflix has provided me with 2, 3-month subscriptions to give away to two awesome Canadian readers. For your chance to win, complete the Rafflecopter below. Good luck!
Disclosure: Nothing other than giveaway was provided by company. All opinions on my blog are mine and are never for sale.
Finish Quantum Trade-In Event (aka FREE Finish!)
It seems like just yesterday that I was in the original Finish Revolution blog tour, I was giving Frankenwasher monthly cleanings, filling her with Jet Dry and learning how to love her for who she is.
Frankenwasher has since been replaced with a new black beauty, but my obsession with Finish Quantum has stayed the same (don't worry, Frankenwasher got a good home, and with a list of how to deal with her many quirks, she's still doing a fine job).
If you still aren't using Finish Quantum, here is your chance to do so for free... let's face it, you'll probably be out shopping this weekend anyway.
Here's the scoop, at participating Walmart stores across Canada, between December 7-9, 2012, the Finish Quantum team will be hosting “Trade-In” Events, at which you can bring in your empty dishwasher detergent and trade it in for a FREE* specially-marked box of Finish Quantum. *Each box will have a mail-in rebate for a full refund – so essentially, trade in your empty box for a FREE box of Finish Quantum!
Pretty cool, eh?
Visit & Like the Finish Canada Facebook Page to find a participating Walmart near you.
Disclosure – I am participating in the Finish Quantum Trade In Event Blog Tour by Mom Central Canada on behalf of Finish. I received compensation as a thank you for participating and for sharing my honest opinion. The opinions on this blog are my own.
Build-A-Bear Workshop Holiday Line & Giveaway
Just last month, Chelsea and I had our first in-store Build-A-Bear Workshop experience, where we built Merry Mint Pup (named Flauta, by Chelsea... no idea where she comes up with her names, but it's food inspired, so it's cool) all by ourselves. I loved the whole experience (maybe even more than Chelsea, she's only 3 and a half), and really wish that they had been around when I was young.
Build-A-Bear Workshop has a fantastic holiday line up this season, including nostalgic holiday favourites like the Dr. Seuss's The Grinch (who I got to review, he is so snuggly and his heart really glows when you push his hand and it grows 3 sizes!), Rudolph & Clarice from Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and new selections such as Hello Kitty Gingerbread and Christmas Cookie Bear.
My Grinch (well, Chelsea's Grinch once Christmas Day gets here) is also dressed up with the 4-piece Grinch Costume Set, which is an optional accessory. While my Grinch doesn't have any sound, if you were building him yourself, you also have the option to add "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch". One thing I thought was so fun in our in-store Build-A-Bear experience was that we could record our own messages to put inside our bears... a great way to personalize an already personalized gift.
Before I learned about Build-A-Bear through previous giveaways and finally getting a chance to visit, I had the impression that they were just too expensive. Now though, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them... the products are of great quality (I don't know how many cheap stuffed animals Chelsea has already had that had little holes in the seams when they were new, which quickly turned into big holes and big messes), the selection of interchangeable accessories and clothes is huge (and also way better quality than other doll clothes I've seen lately) and most importantly the service in store was incredible... something I am pretty picky about. If you aren't close to a Build-A-Bear Workshop, you can also shop online... not quite as fun, but still just as personal.
One lucky Mmm... is for Mommy reader is going to win their very own Clarice Build-A-Bear! Here she is snuggled up with Rudolph...
