The challenge had three categories:
· Best original kid-tastic watermelon carving (my Jack-O-Lanterns are exactly the same each year, involving three triangles and a snaggle tooth... out!)
· Best re-creation of a NWPD kid-tastic watermelon carving (see excuse above)
· Best original kid-tastic watermelon recipe (all contained booze... therefore sadly, not kid-tastic)
Finally the night came and I just said screw it and cut it open... inspiration would come. Maybe I just never paid any attention to a watermelon before, but it was beautiful! All the swirls and twirls and pretty pink...
When I cut up half of the watermelon, it came to me why I was having so much trouble coming up with ideas... I think that it is perfect just the way it is. All you need is a big slice and a couple napkins and you have a good time.
Even I couldn't let myself get away with simply cutting up an (albeit pretty) watermelon as my contribution though, so I decided to try to recreate the simple Agua Fresca that a local Mexican restaurant here in Halifax serves... it was delicious!
My Watermelon Juice
A blender jar almost full of cubed watermelon
The juice of half a fresh lime
Sugar to taste (this watermelon was so sweet, I only needed a tablespoon to make it really sweet)
Blend until it's juicy and serve over ice!
Chelsea loved it and felt pretty special because she got to drink out of Mommy's glass. Of course, just this past weekend we were invited to a friend's little girl's first birthday party, and what greets us but this, just to rub in my melon-carving ineptitude...

Dana, you put me to SHAME! I love this turtle (and so did the handful of toddlers who ate the whole bowl)!

That is so creative with the turtle watermelon carving! Never seen anything like that before.
ReplyDeleteWatermelon juice looks so refreshing...my boys love watermelon and would go nuts for this. When we were small my mom would cut up the watermelon in cubes, put it in a jug, add some suar and stick it in the fridge. We would snack on that during the summer.
Holy! That turtle is amazing! So creative!
ReplyDeleteI love the sounds of your watermelon juice - sounds like the perfect refreshing drink!
Thanks for sharing
I also submitted for this challenge (I especially loved getting a watermelon in the mail teehee).
