Spooky Treats from Halloweens Past

It's almost scary how quickly Halloween is approaching.  Even scarier is how I thought that was a clever pun, ha!  I've always enjoyed the 'cutesy' side of Halloween, opting to dress as something cute instead of the ghoulish or just plain nasty. Over the years, I've made some holiday treats that have reflected that cutesy side and I thought I would share them with you.  None of these recipe ideas are difficult at all, they are all just variations of everyday party or potluck fare.

These are my absolute favourite to date.  I made these Vampire Bat Bites last year and they were a huge hit!  They are simply a bite-sized cheese ball (use your favourite cheese ball recipe, Boursin, or just plain cream cheese) rolled in poppy seeds and then adorned with olive/peppercorn eyes and sunflower seed fangs.  The wings are two blue corn tortilla chips.  If you are going to take these to a party, I recommend taking the chips with you to stick in once you get there... or they take up a lot of room and containers!

Devilled Eggs, even the name is perfect for Halloween!  All I did was add some green colour (I'm sure if you whipped it up with some spinach, you'd get the green without the colouring), some sliced stuffed green olives for pupils and some paprika for that bloodshot look.  Again, easy (and cheap!)

Again with the eyeball theme, a few years back I made these peanut butter balls, the same ones I make for Christmas, but I dipped them in melted white chocolate and used mini M&Ms for the pupils and some red food gel and a toothpick to draw in the bloodshot effect.

I'm not sure what my contribution to our annual Halloween party will be yet, so I'd better get my thinking cap on.  Have you made anything really fun for Halloween?  If so, give me some ideas!
